The acoustics of a building must comply with regulations which aim to define a sound quality around and inside a building, and which defines sound levels not to be exceeded. There are architectural solutions (control of reverberation) or techniques (choice of soundproofing materials for example) which are offered by design offices specializing in building acoustics.

The control of the acoustics of a building must be considered on several levels: It is necessary to control the sounds produced inside the building (by industrial machines for example) so that they are maintained at a bearable level for the personnel, and that they are confined to the building so as not to pollute the local residents. A residential building, for example, will have to be properly insulated from the outside (noise from car traffic, etc.), but also soundproof each apartment to avoid neighborhood disturbances.
