A scrap shredder, which can also be called a scrap granulator, or a metal crusher, is a device whose purpose is to reduce metal waste to very small pieces. The usefulness of crushing scrap metal is to subsequently allow easier transport, a greatly reduced volume, and the possibility of compacting the crushed metals into briquettes intended for remelting.

A scrap metal shredder is on a much larger scale like a mill: The metal waste is poured into a kind of large funnel and directed onto rotating blades which reduce it to small chips of homogeneous size. Scrap shredders are sometimes "two-in-one" devices that combine shredder and bricklayer.
