The most common noise measurement instruments are sound level meters, which measure the sound level in a given environment. Dosimeters or exposure meters are also used to perform this type of measurement but must be exposed to noise for an extended period of time.

Noise measuring instruments are used both by professionals, such as in the automotive or construction industry to measure the noise levels of a vehicle or a construction site, and also by private individuals. Sound level meters are equipped with a microphone which transforms the acoustic measurement into an electrical signal, converted into decibels.
Most noise measurement instruments are portable, and can measure sound intensities between 30 and 150 decibels.
