Cependant, l'OI génère un rejet concentré qui nécessite une gestion appropriée, souvent via des techniques de gestion de saumure. L'efficacité énergétique et le coût opérationnel sont également des facteurs critiques à évaluer pour la viabilité de l'OI dans le traitement des eaux usées.
